Boys Varsity Basketball
|Loudoun County High School||62|
|Woodgrove High School||59|
The LCHS Boys Varsity basketball team went on the road and came away with a huge win against conference rival Woodgrove last night by a score of 62-59 on a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer by sophomore Matt Anderson. The Raiders got out to an early lead as they led 18-8 at the end of the first quarter and led 29-19 at halftime, but Woodgrove clawed its way back into the game. With the score all knotted up at 59, the Raiders came down and had three opportunities in the final 7 seconds to win the game. Anderson missed a running shot just outside the lane, but junior Derek McCandless tapped the missed shot back to fellow junior Joe Alexander who had an open look at the top of the key but couldn’t get it to go. Alexander’s shot was then rebounded by senior Cam Corbett who dished it out to Anderson, who drilled the shot right in front of the Raiders' bench as time expired, stunning the home crowd and sending the visiting side of the bleachers into a frenzy.
Anderson’s shot gave him a game-high 27 points to lead the Raiders, while Alexander had 17 points (including 13 in the first half) as he fought through an ankle injury he sustained in the second half. McCandless also added 12 points for the victors.
The team is back in action tomorrow night when they host Dominion in another conference matchup.
